Autoethnographic Study

Testing how difficult gameplay makes regulation, flow, tilt, persistence, and re-entry visible in real time.

Study Purpose

This study examines whether the Skills-in-Play Loop can be observed during challenging action RPG and Soulslike gameplay.

What I'm Testing

The study tests whether difficult gameplay produces identifiable cycles of challenge, appraisal, response, regulation, adjustment, re-entry, and outcome.

The study examines whether this proposed loop can be identified consistently across repeated gameplay episodes and different outcomes.

Why Difficult Games

Difficult encounters create repeated failure, immediate feedback, rapid retry opportunities, and visible shifts in decision-making.

Cross-Session Synthesis

Early sessions are being compared across challenge type, starting state, regulation attempts, re-entry quality, persistence, and stopping decisions.

Observable shifts in gameplay, body cues, self-talk, regulation attempts, and whether re-entry leads to learning, escalation, task reduction, or stopping.

What This Study Does Not Claim

This study does not establish clinical efficacy, generalizability, or a validated treatment protocol.

Research in Progress

This phase is being used to refine BFBC concepts, identify observable patterns, and prepare for future research with additional adult participants.

Preliminary SIP Loop Example

After a brief pause and one concrete adjustment, the player re-enters the encounter with improved timing, focused attention, and clearer use of feedback.
